Interior Design for Beginners

Interior Design for Beginners 🏠

First off, I just want to put out a little disclaimer to say that I am not a professional Interior Designer, it is just something that I am interested in and look at as a hobby of sorts.

Now that we've got that out of the way, Welcome to my beginners Guide to interior design. I am going to suggest a few steps to follow if you are thinking about redecorating your home.

Step 1:
Pick a theme. When decorating you need to have a theme in mind e.g. Shabby Chic, farmhouse, Pastel Colours, Nautical etc.

In my bedroom that I recently redecorated, we decided to go for a theme of Grey and Duck Egg.

Step 2:
Decide how you are going to apply the theme for example, are you going to colour the walls & furniture or are you going to focus on the accessories?

We decided to do both.

Step 3:
Decide on your features/statement pieces. Every room in your house will have a statement piece that holds the room together whether that is a plush sofa, a picture wall or the utensils in your kitchen.

We decided our statement piece was going to be my vanity wall. Instead of getting an expensive vanity unit, Billy had the great idea to create a vanity using 5 shelves and a mirror.

Step 4:
Pick your accessories(This is my favourite step)!! Do you like to have candles and incense plotted around for the amazing smells? Thick, luxurious throws with soft pillows to finish of your bedding/sofa?

We (and by we I mean me) like to have it all pretty much. We have statement pillows on the bed: 2 large grey, 2 medium duck egg, 2 small grey. If I could get away with adding more I would but Billy would probably dump me...I also like to have throws on the bed, candles on the shelves/draws, artificial flower arrangements on the chest of draws, photo's on the wall etc.

Billy is a fireman so we have an axe mounted on the wall. It is tradition to receive an axe when you retire from the fire service so as a 21st birthday gift, his uncle had one made for him.

I also need to mention, we got ALL of our furniture from good old Ikea! We managed to get 2 double wardrobes, a chest of draws, 2 night stands, 7 shelves, a mirror, 2 bedside lamps and a light shade for the "big light" all for a such a reasonable price. Believe me, I am frugal fran in terms of paying full price for things. I tend to only buy things in the sales and if it seems a bit pricey, I try to make it myself! Because I look for good bargains, I find myself constantly buying new things and spending money...oops sorry Bill.

As the furniture was flatpack, it meant that we had to put it together ourselves. We managed to do the chest of draws and nightstand but then we contacted our trusted DIY man (my dad) to do the double wardrobes. My Step-Dad also helped to put the mirror on the wall before we called a local handyman to put the shelves up, put the soundbar on the wall, put the axe on the wall and hang our photo frame.

Since redecorating, it has lit a fire under me to get more involved in home decor. I spend so much of my time on Pinterest pinning loads of ideas to my "Home" board. I am constantly trying to add nice accessories around the house, mostly in candle forms or artificial flowers.

As we don't have our own house to decorate yet, I will have to continue planning virtually. By the time we have a blank canvas on of our own, I will be a pro😉

Keep your eyes peeled for photo's of home decor gems that I have found at bargain prices😻
